Fort Calgary Riverwalk/Sentinels, Calgary, AB

The RiverWalk project is a multi-use pathway on the edge of downtown Calgary. The portion hugging Fort Calgary needed a distinct look to interpret historical boundaries.

I was part of the Project Team and Advisory Committee for the Fort Calgary segment of the Bow RiverWalk, a project of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC). Most users are travelling by car or bike, with some pedestrians. Interpretive elements have to be understood quickly, and at a distance as well as up close. Using the colours and iconic imagery of the North West Mounted Police ties the experience to the history of the site. Thematic seating offers places to spend time in quiet reflection. The landmark Sentinel pillars mark four significant stages of the Fort’s development.
