Cityscape Wetland, Calgary, AB

A wetland complex close to Calgary International Airport lent itself to a theme tying features of the wetland to activities at the airport.

The wetland is on the Rotary/Mattamy Greenway, a linear park and pathway system that encircles the city, connecting over 55 communities. The project involved working with Parks Foundation Calgary, The City of Calgary, Parks, and the sponsor, Mattamy Homes, to create four interpretive signs along the pathway that would provide a unique experience for visitors while fulfilling part of the requirements for the Alberta curriculum on wetlands. The site also participates in the Agents of Nature mobile app.

The site is one of several Rotary/Mattamy Greenway sites implemented by j.communications. I also wrote the Interpretive Plan for the entire 138 km project.

Role: Interpretive planning, research, writing, project management

“Our organization has worked with Joan Lawrence of j.communications for numerous years on wetland interpretive signs, donor recognition signs and dog park signage that have been installed in multiple park projects along the Greenway. The designs for these signs have been consistently creative, informative and beautiful. Parks Foundation will continue to work with j.communications on future projects due the high quality product that is produced under Joan Lawrence’s direction.”
